Hotel Deccan Continental opened for business in 1978, and has evolved over the years for what it is today. The present Managing Director, Ajit Singh, took over from his father in 1980, and has run the hotel ever since.

The hotel is very conveniently located — 1 km from the Rajiv Gandhi airport, 3 km from the Secunderabad railway station, and 1 km from the main shopping area of Secunderabad. It has a fine panoramic view of Hussain Sagar lake. It has 84 rooms, with the tariff ranging between Rs 500 for single occupancy of a non-airconditioned room to Rs 1,500 for an air-conditioned double suite. Check out time is 12 noon.

The rooms are clean and well maintained. They all have attached bathrooms with running hot and cold water, telephone, piped music, CTV and Star TV for 24 hours. The A/C rooms are centrally air-conditioned with individual controls in each room.

The hotel provides several facilities and services including safe deposit lockers, laundry, dry cleaning, doctor (by appointment), 24-hour room service, left luggage room, courtesy coach to airport every hour (500 to 1800 hours), swimming pool, gym, lawn tennis, table tennis, badminton, card room and billiards. Secretarial service is available on request, and there is a STD booth in the lobby. Computer communication services are also available. The hotel has two restaurants: Black Stallion, an a la carte multi cuisine restaurant, and Bear Point, a multi-cuisine food and beverage outlet.

The hotel is ideally suited for seminars, conventions, conferences, training programs and weddings. In fact, it is much sought after for group offers and many facilities. It has acquired a reputation among travelers and for group bookings and middle income social activities.

This is a good place for budget conscious tourists who are not looking for five star accommodation and the frills. Ajit Singh tells me that the Deccan Continental has become known for the large-scale gatherings it can organize. And he is fully geared for it. He has the space, the infrastructure and the expertise. Watching a traditional wedding take place on these premises — the color, the music, the flowers, the gaiety, the tamasha and the food — is a worthwhile experience in itself!
